Project Title: Durley Reservoir Wetland and Ancient Woodland Creation
Objective:
The project aimed to transform a flood-prone but seasonally dry area into a year-round wetland habitat. This involved creating wetland scrapes and ponds, and using the excavated soil to form an elevated area mimicking ancient woodland features.
Challenges:
One challenge was the need to protect an underground Wessex Water pipeline by using wooden bog mats, which limited the size of dump trucks. As a result, multiple smaller dumpers were used to transport soil to the ancient woodland site.
Equipment and Methods:
A 16-ton excavator with an Engcon tilt rotator was crucial for shaping the wetland banks and creating artificial woodland features. This equipment allowed precise landscaping to achieve the desired ecological results.
Outcomes:
The project was a great success. Both the team and their long-standing customer were very pleased with the outcome, and it further strengthened their working relationship.
Feedback and Lessons Learned:
The customer provided positive feedback, and the project highlighted the value of adaptable equipment and careful planning around existing infrastructure.
